Viagra the most popular pill on Saga cruises

Forget headache tablets, pills for arthritic joints or lumbago preparations, the most popular medicine for elderly Saga tours travellers is the sex drug Viagra.

Demand for the anti-impotence drug is outstripping other medications on the company’s 'Spirit of Adventure’ cruises suggesting that passengers are retiring to their cabins for something slightly more stimulating than a cup of cocoa or a good book.

”Despite the exotic places and fantastic entertainment, our customers still want to live life to the full,” a spokesman for the company that organises holidays for the over fifties said yesterday.

Medical staff on the ship, which takes 352 guests all over the world, carry a full medicine cabinet to cope with any major or minor ailments that might occur on board.

Medics could not help observing that Viagra prescriptions exceeded those for other drugs as holiday-makers enjoy belated second honeymoons or holiday romances in spectacular surroundings.

The revelation shows that the baby-boom generation is refusing to decline into a doddery dotage.

Dr William Alexander, a retired consultant physician who has published studies on erectile dysfunction, said: “I approve of this. A lot of people who go on cruises have been widowed and are looking for potential partners.

”If they can’t manage it they can get depressed and find it difficult to socialise. This can revolutionise an elderly person’s life and get them out and about and relive their youth.”

Other attractions on the 'Spirit of Adventure’ include a spa, fitness equipment, a library and lectures from expert guest speakers.

The ship visits many destinations including: the maritime ports of Ireland and Wales, the Gulf of Bothnia; The Nordics, vineyards of France and Iberia; Greece to Constantinople, the Canary Islands, Antarctica and the Southern Caribbean.
