Staxyn is a new dissolvable erectile dysfunction pill form of the drug vardenafil (Levitra), which is available as a film-coated tablet. Given that Staxyn for erectile dysfunction treatment dissolves rapidly in the mouth while Levitra enters the digestive tract, investigators wanted to compare the two forms of vardenafil and determine how fast Staxyn works in obtaining an erection suitable for sexual activity.

Both Staxyn and Levitra contain the generic drug vardenafil, a common treatment for erectile dysfunction but the two drugs given at the same dose are not interchangeable because Staxyn provides greater systemic exposure than Levitra.

Researchers looked at data from two 12-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled phase III trials that used 10 mg Staxyn. Data about Levitra came from the week-12 results of four double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled phase III trials. Success was based on the total number of attempts at sexual intercourse and achieving an erection sufficient for intercourse.

When comparing Staxyn and placebo, 59.8% of men who took Staxyn achieved an erection suitable for intercourse within 15 minutes of taking the drug compared with 38.2% of men who took a placebo. At the 16 to 30 minute mark, 70.2% of men who took Staxyn were successful in obtaining an erection compared with 51.0% of men who took placebo.

A review of the information regarding Levitra showed that for the same time periods, men who took either the 10 mg or 20 mg doses were able to get a sufficient erection for intercourse just as quickly as did the men who took Staxyn.
