The Jordan Customs Department (JCD) on Sunday said its agents had seized 9,500 Viagra sexual enhancement pills, syringes and "sexual ointments" from a passenger coming to Aqaba on a ship from Egypt.

"Our agents searched a bag belonging to a passenger and found the smuggled shipment wrapped in foil," a senior JCD official said.

The passenger had placed sesame bread on top of the smuggled goods, but agents became suspicious because the space of the bag did not match the amount of bread inside it, the official explained.

"The passenger was allowed to go but the smuggled shipment remained in our possession because he could not pay the fine," the JCD official added.

Sunday's seizure was the second of smuggled Viagra in as many days.

On Saturday, JCD agents seized 39,000 doses of the drug, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, found in two vehicles in Amman.

Smuggled Viagra is considered a public health hazard because users of such pills need medical prescriptions, customs officials have warned in the past.

In a statement issued by the Jordan Customs Department, its director, Maj. Gen. Ghaleb Sarayreh, was quoted as stressing the importance of combating all kinds of smuggling in order to ensure "economic and social stability in the country".
