Sleep disorder pill now popping up as 'Viagra for the brain' 2012-07-19
By ABC News

In our busy, often sleep-deprived modern lives, many people are looking for that certain something to give them a boost at home and work.

For some, it can range from a potent espresso to those little 5-hour energy drinks, to an intense morning workout or special diet.

But what if you could get that edge from a pill, and one that apparently has little side effects for most people?

More and more people are asking their doctor - or going online - for the narcolepsy drug Provigil, which is said to enhance the ability to focus, concentrate and perform better at work or sports. It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie.

But is it safe?

The possible side effects - a possible but rare rash that can be deadly - seem scary but that doesn't seem to have dampened the demand for the medication, which has been called "Viagra for the brain."

ABC News took a closer look at Provigil in this report.
