A Man's World. Until Tomorrow. 2012-08-01
By Sam Kussin-Shoptaw

The Senate is a few days away from a long recess, struggling to come to an agreement on a package of amendments to a cybersecurity bill, and Majority Leader Harry Reid took to the floor this morning, using his guaranteed speaking time to dust off a trustworthy Democratic attack line.

Contraception.

The timing is intentional as starting tomorrow insurers will be required to expand preventative health care services and provide contraception coverage for women at no additional cost.

The change, a result of the 2010 health care overhaul, was applauded today as Reid explained that in the past, reproductive coverage was only readily available for men.

“Viagra? Fine, well take care of that. Anything a man wanted, they got. But not a woman.”

Reid continued his victory lap saying, “As a result of this bill we passed, being a woman is no longer a pre-existing disability in America.”

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a man who appears to be trying to get everything he wants amendments-wise on the cybersecurity bill, is asking for a vote to repeal “Obamacare.”

Unfortunately for the Kentucky Republican, Harry Reid isn’t having it as he plots a path forward on the measure to secure America’s technology infrastructure.

“I think that we should understand that I don’t think a woman getting contraception has a thing to do with shutting down the power grids in America.”
