At least nine people were arrested after authorities raided several Lake County stores and seized more than $100,000 worth of counterfeit merchandise, including purses, cell phone cases, cigars, compact discs -- and even 2,800 Viagra pills.
According to Lake County jail booking information, those arrested were charged with a variety of offenses including counterfeiting private labels, having unauthorized copies of recorded materials, providing contact lenses without being licensed and providing contact lenses without a prescription.
Charged were: Janakkumar Patel, arrested in Tavares; Iqbal Golani, arrested in Tavares; Syed Hossain, arrested in Eustis; Foysol Ahmed, arrested in Tavares; Hitesh Patel, arrested in Tavares; Ram Wadhwa, arrested in Mount Dora; MD Rahaman, arrested in Eustis; Tajnuth Singh, arrested in Eustis; and Anwarali Thanwala, arrested in Tavares.
During the crackdown, Hitesh Patel and Foysol Ahmed were detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Sandi Poreda, a spokeswoman for the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, which had oversight of the raid, put the estimated total value of the seized products at $100,570. The biggest bust was the Bay Street Food Mart and Warehouse in Eustis, where agents took 21 counterfeit handbags and wallets (Louis Vuitton, Coach, Gucci, Burberry) 10 unauthorized music CDs, non-tax paid tobacco, 21 Nike hats and 2,800 Viagra pills, valued at $69,520.
Other Lake County stores raided were: Lady Lake Discount Beverage, Lady Lake, 13 counterfeit Cohiba cigars; Lake Dora Discount Beverage, Tavares, 61 unauthorized copies of music CDs; Discount Tobacco Shop, Tavares, 2,700 counterfeit Cohiba cigars and 25 counterfeit, name brand, cell phone cases; Lee's Food Market, Eustis, two watches, two pairs of Nike shoes and 50 pairs of contact lenses; and Discount Shop and Go, Eustis, 720 pairs of contact lenses.
The Wabhwa Food Mart, in Mount Dora, also was served with a warrant.
Agents with the state Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco -- which is under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation -- took part in the raid, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Lake County Sheriff's Office, and police departments from Tavares, Eustis and Lady Lake.
Citing an ongoing investigation, Poreda would not give any details about what sparked the raid or if it only focused on stores in Eustis, Tavares, Lady Lake and Mount Dora.
